Company is the leading international philanthropic management consulting firm and foremost authority on fundraising best practices, serving a broad constituency of nonprofits. The firm seeks an entrepreneurial and energetic advancement professional for the position of Senior Vice President and Practice Area Leader (“PAL”) for the Higher Education practice area.

The PAL is responsible for sharing the leadership and oversight of the practice, providing direction for innovative product/service development, business strategy, client service delivery, and practice. The PAL will receive a high level of support from the firm’s corporate headquarters in Chicago. A team of highly experienced and technically proficient practice support personnel will provide contract administration, client services, knowledge management, and marketing.

The PAL will be a member of the firm’s Senior Leadership council (“SLC”), and will play a role in the overall management and leadership of the firm. The PAL works collaboratively with the firm’s consultants to plan, execute, and deliver solutions and strategic consulting across all practice areas (in addition to Higher Education), including Advanced Analytics, Advancement Services, Academic Medicine, Alumni Relations, Arts and Culture, Independent Schools, Strategic Communications, and Training and Coaching. The PAL deploys evidenced-based consulting methodologies and develops sophisticated analytics tools in close collaboration with the firm’s integrated, large-scale client engagement teams. The PAL may function as a member of various project teams and/or as the overall Project Director, leading data collection, performing rigorous analysis, and producing clear, compelling, insightful, and accurate reports for the firm’s clients. The PAL will also provide direction for innovative product/service development to drive sustained growth and profitability, while ensuring that client deliverables meet the highest standards of quality.

The PAL will be a self-starter with strong leadership skills, business and entrepreneurial acumen, an ability to initiate and sustain client relationships, and to manage and enable the career growth of professional colleagues. It is essential that the PAL exhibit a high level of flexibility, perseverance and a tenacious work ethic.

Key Responsibilities

Core Mission

Lead the Higher Education practice area in developing strategies, products and personnel capabilities, marketing and sales plans, and delivery methodologies that enhance the ability to initiate, sustain and steward the philanthropic missions of our clients.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Leverage a wide range of skills, experience, and leadership approaches to manage a group of talented, creative professionals, who will build upon existing programs and create new programs and client offerings
  • Ensure a focus on strategic and operational leadership and management, ensuring quality of deliverables against exacting deadlines
  • Motivate the team to identify and implement specific integrated projects intended to enhance the visibility of the group in their competitive arena and develop a dominant position in marketplace
  • Optimize value and service delivery to clients, increase and secure profitable business, and motivate and develop a high-performing team

Operations

  • Ensure that practice area products and services support GG+A’s overall strategy and revenue goals
  • Grow and guide a team of professionals in the support of the widening range of products, services, and client deliverables
  • Develop process improvement and management methodologies to increase efficiencies, cost effectiveness, and workflow optimization
  • Facilitate and enable close collaboration, cooperation, and communication between team members and the overall firm
  • Drive continuous improvement in all areas including systems, policies and procedures, client service and technical support, quality control and management reporting in order to improve the overall effectiveness of the practice area

Business and Product Development

  • Create, design and implement strategies to drive revenue growth and profitability.
  • Advise on strategic business development and planning issues, including new product development and ongoing innovation of existing products
  • Work closely with staff to establish annual, quarterly, and monthly sales goals, and manage performance to meet established sales goals.
  • Foster teamwork, cooperation, and results-oriented outcomes with consulting professionals across the firm.
  • Develop proposals for consulting services to prospective clients and review/edit proposals prepared by other teams. Lead and/or participate in sales presentations as appropriate.
  • Pursue opportunities to support the overall marketing/business development objectives of product portfolio by creating lead-generating content, articles, webinars, speaking at professional conferences, writing white papers, and/or other similar activities.
  • On average, the PAL will maintain a portfolio of 6-10 clients at any given time, while also guiding his/her practice area’s overall portfolio.

Consulting

  • Provide consulting services to client institutions including fundraising program assessments, strategic planning (feasibility) studies, campaign planning, major gift program planning and execution, staff and volunteer training, strategic planning, alumni relations assessments, case for support development, etc.
  • Liaise with client organization staff and leaders with respect and confidence, including senior leadership across and beyond advancement functions
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to working as part of a team on client engagements across a spectrum of non-profit institutions that vary by size, mission, and sector
  • Compile and present clear, compelling, cohesive, accurate, and persuasive presentations and reports, independently or with the support of others. Such compilation and review usually includes the reconciliation of anecdotal findings, benchmarking data, Major Gifts Portfolio Analysis (MGPA), and other analytics (if included) to ensure alignment throughout the report/presentation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experienced leader with demonstrated management skills and ability to set and elevate performance expectations
  • P&L management skills and proven history of attaining revenue and profit targets
  • Strong sales skills and a significant drive to build a client base
  • Proven organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong executive presence, business acumen, and verbal/written communication skills, including the ability to effectively visualize and communicate complex statistical ideas to client executives
  • Critical thinking that enables effective data review and ability to generate narrative observations and findings
  • Proactive, self-starter who can think strategically, analytically, and entrepreneurially
  • Poise and maturity to present findings and recommendations in a confident, inspiring manner
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and serve as a consultative problem solver
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with consulting professionals and clients
  • Ability to produce top-quality work under pressure, with minimal direction, while dealing with competing priorities and exacting deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for the mission and goals of GG+A and its nonprofit clients
  • Ability to travel up 3-4 days per week, as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of frontline development experience with exposure to major campaign planning and leading high performing fundraising teams
  • Extensive experience within the Higher Education advancement domain
  • Demonstrable knowledge and interest in fundraising best practices within the nonprofit sector
  • Experience with Salesforce Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and SharePoint
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, specifically with Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
