Chicago Based Veteran Peer Support Specialist Trainer

This is a Contract position in Chicago, IL posted November 23, 2020.

Organization Summary
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is a leading national organization focusing on mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder, which affect over 21 million Americans, account for over 50% of the nation’s suicides every year, and cost $23 billion in lost workdays and other workplace losses. DBSA offers peer-based, wellness-oriented support and empowering services and resources available when people need them, where they need them, and how they need to receive them—online 24/7, in local support groups, in audio and video casts, or in printed materials distributed by DBSA, our chapters, and mental health care facilities across America. Through our extensive online and print resources and our nearly 600 support groups and more than 200 chapters, DBSA reaches millions of people each year with in-person and online peer support; current, readily understandable information about depression and bipolar disorder; and empowering tools focused on an integrated approach to wellness.

Integrity: Perform at the highest standards. We strive for best in class. Be honest in our interactions and develop trusting relationships. Take personal, and where appropriate, team responsibility for results. Acknowledge what we don’t know.

Openness: Demonstrate willingness to continuously learn, grow, and change. Celebrate our differences. Be present, curious and receptive to new and different ideas and situations.

Mindfulness: Ask for help and reciprocate help when needed. Respect each other’s perspectives, experiences, and sensitivities. Be mindful of our individual impact on the work environment. Speak with thoughtfulness. We think before we speak.

Collaboration: Show a willingness to give up personal ownership for the greater good/outcome. Work together to foster individual and organizational growth. Create an environment where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Scope of Role
DBSA has a contract position available for a Chicagoland-based Veteran to be a contract trainer for our peer support specialist course.  This course is presented in either a 5-week or condensed 2-week version.  In either scenario this contract role will be 4 full days and then 6 one-hour conference calls for a total of 38 hours of contract work approximately 4-6 times per year. Veterans are paid a flat fee for facilitation these 38 hours of training.  Training sessions are booked as early in advance as possible, allowing Veterans to manage their schedules and other responsibilities.  However, flexibility is also needed as part of this role.  Qualified candidates are invited to submit resumes and – if applicable – will be invited to interview. Training for this position includes being available to sit in on one of our course sessions for a total of 32 hours.  This observational experience will lay the foundation needed to become a best-in-class trainer for the Veterans and civilians DBSA serves.  Upon completion of this observational training experience we will evaluate if an individual is a strong candidate to progress further to co-trainer status and begin co-training small groups typically 10 in size.  This is a unique opportunity for only those Veterans in the Chicagoland area.  We are presently executing our trainings virtually.  In the future we expect to execute some virtually and some in person, downtown Chicago.  Applicants must be comfortable to be downtown Chicago at future dates TBD as local, state and federal authorities deem safe.
